Spandau Citadel (Spandauer Zitadelle) was originally built in the 16th century, and is now the oldest structure in Berlin that is not religious. Visitors can take guided tours of the Spandau Citadel which are available at weekends, but only by advanced bookings, and this is an informative way to learn about the history of the building.
This ancient fortress is surrounded by a moat and it is situated close to the River Havel and overlooks the small town of Spandau. Spandau Citadel features numerous Jewish gravestones that are built directly into the fortress wall. This is a enchanting area of the city and is well worth a visit.
